Protein Drink

So I've been wondering about adding in a protein drink - after workouts or if I can't find anything for breakfast before I run out the door. I've checked out the Biggest Loser ones, but the only place I've found them in town (although I haven't driven around looking for them per se), is Sports Authority, and MAN were they expensive. But anyway, in my kickboxing class today (which HOLY COW! she decided to totally kick out butts today. We all thought we were dying, but that's a different story.) she recommended going home and having a protein shake. She's a nurse, the kickboxing and chisel (one of them) instructor and is seriously ripped, so I think I'm going to try it and see how it goes.

I don't know which one to try, but Aaron had some in the cupboards that he never drinks, so I pulled out the blender, mixed it with 2% milk, and drank it down with a straw (I find nasty things taste better with a straw) and it was actually pretty good.
Here's what the nutrition facts say on the back:
fat: 1.5
sat fat: .5
trans fat: 0
sodium: 55
carb: 2
sugar: 1
protein: 23

So, it seems to be pretty good. I'm sure it would be better for me if I used skim milk or water... but I'm not sure I can handle that. The blender did a great job of mixing it up and I didn't have any chunks, which totally makes me throw the rest of it in the sink. Oh, it's Whey protein, if anyone was wondering.

Anywho - we'll see if it seems to make a difference. I'm hoping that it'll make me not quite so sore or tired after the kickboxing classes. Plus, more protein for me is a good thing.

Carrie - would this be something that would work for you with the vegetarian lifestyle? I mean, if it was me, I think I'd have a problem getting all my protein in without eating the same foods over and over again. I read the ingredients and it does contain milk ingredients, but no animal proteins. Just thinking about you. By the way - are you doing ok? I haven't had the chance to actually talk to you much lately. I know work has been ridiculously crazy for you. How are you doing? Is there anything I can do to help?

  2. You can get a good whey protein at Vitamin Cottage that I believe you can buy in bulk. I use to make protein shakes all the time. They have a great mix in probiotic yogurt drink that you can mix in with it that makes it tastes yum and has a lot of nutrients and active cultures. I've read a lot about when you should consume the bulk of your protein and it should be within 30 minutes after a workout. It helps to rebuild your muscles after an intense workout. Also, you can make it a meal replacement because a good protein shake should be around 350 calories and about 30 grams of protein.
I'm getting plenty of protein, because calorie for calorie vegetables have more than meat. For example, if you take 100 calories of spinach and 100 calories of meat, the spinach has 3 times the amount of protein. BTW, I know you won't believe me but you can add spinach to a protein drink and you can't taste it all all. It just makes it a funny color! The belder blends it completely and it is such a good way to get your greens. If you want good recipes, that have a lot of vegetables and protein, but none of the harsh chemicals that are in meat, you can go to my blog and click on greener eating on the side. It has a lot of good recipes that I know you would love!

  3. Wow, I didn't know that calorie for calorie veggies have more protein - that's so cool! I *have* heard that you can't taste spinach though in most things like protein drinks. In fact, I bought the recipe book "Deceptively Delicious" - you know, from Seinfeld's wife. Anyway, a lot of her stuff has pureed spinach in it too, even brownies and whatnot. I'm anxious to try some of the recipes, but so far haven't.
I'll have to swing by your blog and check out the recipes. I'm always up for a good new recipe!

I think that I'll use up what Aaron has (since we have it and all) and then see what vitamin cottage has and the difference between the two. I do have to say that I feel better today with my muscles and whatnot than I normally do after kickboxing. I do have a terrible headache, but I think that's just a coincidence and due mainly to my neck being out.

SO - you didn't answer my other question though Carrie - HOW are YOU? Stressed to the max? Anything I can do? Are you planning on coming to Brielle's party on Sunday? I sent you an email about it but hadn't heard anything. I will be happy to find some veggie alternative for you! :)

  4. I was just at your blog Carrie and going to leave a comment... but for some reason I can't. Either I'm retarded, which is highly probable today, or the black background isn't showing black text in a text box or something. I just thought I'd let you know :)
I also checked out the greener eating blog. How fun! Oooh, the blueberry one looked to die for! Although I'm pretty sure that I won't be trying the califlower soup ;) lol
