So, let me just say I am a condiment junkie. I love it all and trying to give it all up is one of the hardest parts of "healthy eating" for me. If I can't have bread and pasta, that's ok because I can still have ketchup. Well ok so I joined Livestrong.com and have been tracking my calories and I mean everything that has gone into my mouth has been tracked. I have done really well on calories but my sodium intake is totally out of control. Partly this is because of my love of condiments but also partly it's because I bought hotdogs and lunchmeat and really haven't eaten much else other than eggs with cheese in them. So for the last two days my sodium intake has been over 5000.
So here are my goals today:
LOTS of water
lower sodium
exercize
research a low sodium condiment that I can make
No caffeine

First off - you totally rock!
ReplyDeleteIf you find something you can make (although there might be low sodium ketchup already?), let me know! Actually, post it on here for all of us! :)
And sodium is soooo hard to get under control! It's ridiculous how much sodium is in everything that is store bought! No wonder America is fat. Good luck! And good luck with the no caffeine thing. Hopefully your headache will go away and not return!
Good for you for tracking it all!! I have been totally slacking in that area. I'm not much of a condiment person, but if I come across anything low sodium, I'll let you know. Sodium is crazy out of control. I use the Morton's Light Salt, which is mostly potassium. And I know you can buy chicken and that doesn't have all the sodium and preservatives and crap in it. That's about as helpful as I can be at the moment.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your goals!! Sounds like you're off to a really good start!!
Here is what I have found:
ReplyDeleteSo I made Salsa
1 can no salt added tomatoes
1 cup fresh roasted green chilis
1/2 c onion
1/2 cilantro
and analyzed it:
For 2 tbls:
calories - 16
sodium - 3mg
Carbs - 3.3 g
Fiber 1.1 g
It was ok on my eggs, however I think I might add 1/2 tsp of Lite Salt to the whole recipe which would change the sodium content to 27 mg.
Maybe also adding some cumin would help too! Actually I think I will try the cumin first.
Also, there is some no salt added mustard that you can buy. It's called Westbrae Natural No Salt Added Stoneground Mustard.
Heinz makes a ketchup that is no salt added but it has sugar.(sod-0, carb-4, cal-20) Or they make a reduced sugar version that is sweetened with splenda.(sod-190mg, carb-1, cal-5)
So Lori and I had talked awhile ago about her MIL doing the 6 week body makeover, so I went to their website (provida.com) and to their forum and they have tons and tons of recipes that are low sodium no sugar recipes. I am going to try this one for ketchup, I will let you know how it works out:
ReplyDelete* 1 6 oz can nsa tomato paste
* 2 Tbsp granulated Splenda, or about 3 packets
* 3/4 cup water
* 1/2 cup white vinegar
* 1/4 tsp onion powder
* 1/8 tsp garlic powder
Mix all ingredients together and simmer for 10 minutes. Set aside in container with lid and let cool. Store in refrigerator for up to 4 months.
So I didn't drink TONS of water but I did ok. I added the cumin to my salsa and after 6 hours in the refrigerator it was pretty tasty! I will go to the store today and get the stuff to make ketchup and let you all know how it tastes! Also, I got zero exercise yesterday. The kids were sick and Justin worked late so I was going to do some Wii fit (hula hooping totally makes me feel the burn) but then by the time I got the kids in bed I was SO tired. Ah well there is always today.
